How bulk trash pickup usually works

How bulk trash pickup usually works

This is a general description. Rules differ by city and county, so check the official source below for yours.

  • Who runs it. Usually the city sanitation department, the county solid waste department, or the private hauler your city contracts with. Unincorporated areas often follow county rules.
  • How you get it. Some places pick up on a set schedule (for example, monthly or on a set week). Others need you to call, use 311, or book online. Some include a few free pickups a year and charge for more.
  • What’s usually accepted. Furniture, mattresses, carpet, and sometimes appliances. Programs often limit the pile size or number of items.
  • What’s usually excluded. Hazardous waste, tires, construction debris from contractors, and loose small trash. Appliances with refrigerant often need a separate appointment.
  • Setting it out. Usually at the curb the night before, not blocking sidewalks, mailboxes, or meters.

If pickup doesn’t fit your timeline, you can haul it to a dump or transfer station yourself, or hire junk removal.

Don't want to haul it yourself? Get a junk removal quote

Junk removal crews load and dispose of it for you, usually priced by how much of the truck you fill.

Tip: get two or three quotes from local junk removal companies, and ask whether the price includes the dump fee and labor.

Bigger project? Estimate the dumpster size you need.
